Me and The Kiwi Sailing our Sceptre 41

We are Heather & Chris…

Me & The Kiwi

We are two very different people who fell in love on a three-hour flight from Nashville to Denver. Two weeks later, we climbed into his 18-wheeler and hit the open road, never looking back.

Chris is from New Zealand. In 1995,  he came to the U.S.A. on a year-long work visa to drive a big rig across this land and discover America. He never left!  He started his career as an aircraft mechanic on the backside of a wrench, soon falling in love with the sky and becoming a pilot. He flies single engines across both land and sea (floatplanes) but his true love is flying that eggbeater (the helicopter), which he does commercially.

Heather has wandered the globe, earning pennies, pesos, and pounds in some of the most uncommon endeavors.

Today, we have become a sailing couple and welcome you to our site, Gypsea Explorer. Here, we share our experiences of buying, refitting, and learning to sail our Sceptre 41 Sailboat wherever the winds may take us.

We are delighted that you are on the journey with us–and remember, you were born to be awesome—not perfect.

Cheers & Welcome Aboard!

Where’s Gypsea?

Meet Sailing Vessel Gypsea

Sailboat against rocks in channel islands

I am Gypsea, a Sceptre 41 Sailboat, born in 1988, in the coastal city of Richmond, British Columbia. I was #36 in a family of 53. Even then, I was a proud Mistress of the Seas, a sleek 41’ in length, decked in fiberglass, a mighty 55 HP Turbo Diesel Yanmar purring inside my tremendous chest. My crown was a stunning but rare Pilot House, which allowed sailors to keep on course from an inside helm, out of the cold weather and elements of the Pacific Northwest.

Those first years were amazing, but eventually, my ocean roamings became more infrequent, and the distances sailed lessening with each passing year. And then, I sat, no longer exploring the blue waters that surrounded me or the islands that bobbed above the surface so near. That was until the year 2023, when my new Humans (who had never sailed before) found me, bought me, took me home, ome and made me new again.

It has been a wild ride, but we are on the open ocean. I am young at heart, older in other places, and still one Sexy Sceptre of the Seas.

So, Welcome aboard the Sailing Vessel Gypsea, where every wave has a story waiting to be discovered.

Fair Winds & Following Seas!
