My Yoga Journey in Mazunte, Mexico.

Mazunte Beach

Mazunte, a small coastal town in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, is a hidden gem for yoga, wellness, food, drink, and people—basically everything.

When I visited in October 2023, I fell in love with this place. Before leaving, I rented an apartment for a return visit. Three months later, I spent 1.5 months there.

In this post, I will share why and how I dove into yoga in Mazunte, Oaxaca, Mexico.

With its pristine beaches, lush greenery, and tranquil atmosphere, Mazunte offers the perfect backdrop for practicing yoga. As you step foot in the town, you’ll be greeted by warm ocean breezes and a sense of tranquility that will instantly calm your mind and soul. Take a moment to thank the Universe for the gift of life and the ability to travel.

Exploring Outdoor Yoga in Mazunte

One of the most captivating aspects of practicing yoga in Mazunte is the opportunity to practice on the ocean–which is my favorite place.

The town, which has a population of about 700, is blessed with an abundance of outdoor locations; from beaches to jungle.

Where I Stayed in Mazunte

I had been studying Spanish  with Professor Dino, and was proficient when I traveled to Mazunte on my first trip–so much so, that I was able to rent an apartment from a local resident. The space, like most coastal abodes, is modest-yet functional. Dirt floors, mosquito nets and no hot water. Freedom from what Americans call progress, is priceless–it is life, beyond the screen.

My room had two beds–(dos camas), as I figured, I would throw it out to the Universe, and see if any girlfriends might want to join. (Yes, I was imagining a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants sort of thing.)

The Garden at my Mazunte Apartment

When, my friend from Alaska, immediately booked her trip, fantasy remained firmly in tact. My space had a garden (un jardin,) private bathroom (bano privado) and an office (y officina.) The kitchen was communal, as I wanted to meet people.

The space is 50 metres from the beach. There are tons of ‘pop-up‘ bars within steps. Sometimes I like to grab a $20 Peso Corona-($1.19USD) and head to the beach.

However, for your first time to Mazunte, it doesn’t matter if you want a rustic eco-lodge or a luxurious beachfront resort, there are tons of options to suit every budget and preference.

Many hotels and retreat centers in Mazunte have dedicated yoga spaces and offer yoga classes as part of their guest experience. Some accommodations even offer yoga retreat packages, where you can immerse yourself in a week-long yoga journey led by experienced instructors.

Whatever you decide, you can rest assured that you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of Mazunte.

Top Outdoor Yoga Spots in Mazunte

When it comes to outdoor yoga in Mazunte, you’ll have lots of choices. One of the most popular spots is Playa Mermejita, a pristine beach with soft golden sand and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Playa Mermejita is a small beach that is very remote and secluded. It is an unofficial nudist beach; but, I suspect most nudists lovers, prefer Zipolite.

A cool thing about Playa Mermejita is that the endangered leatherback turtles are known to come ashore to nest. Turtle watching is a big deal in Mazunte. They are released into the ocean regularly, and it is an amazing thing to see.

Another must-visit location is Punta Cometa, which is a sacred rocky outcrop that overlooks the ocean. As you find your balance on the uneven terrain, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas that are sure to take your breath away.

Discovering the Local Yoga Community

Casa Om is an option. I stress the word option. A lot of people love it. I do not. They have a ton of teachers from various disciplines, and offer classes at their location: Yoga | Meditation | Music | Dance | Ceremonies and Workshops, with schedule and prices listed on their Facebook Page.

It is an assortment of eclectic options; but BE WARNED: It is not exactly as it appears online. It is in a jungle-esque terrain, dark, and not maintained. For me, it was a little too rustic.

The better bang for your peso, is definitely Mitotecali Danza y Yoga.

Mitotecali Yoga Mazunte

This is primarily a dance school; but, they offer breath-work, yoga, ceremonies, intensives and Acro Yoga–(which I would love to try!) The prices are very fair and the school is amazing.

Every wall and street post is covered in yoga and wellness opportunities. Take a stroll down any street and find what grabs your heart, imagination and spirit. Afterall, Mazunte is called The Magic City, for a reason.

Yoga and Wellness Activities in Mazunte

In Mazunte, yoga is just the beginning of a holistic wellness experience. The town is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, natural healing, and spiritual well-being. After your yoga session, you can indulge in a wide range of wellness activities, such as meditation, sound healing, and Ayurvedic treatments.

Turtles in Mazunte

Mazunte is also home to the National Mexican Turtle Center, where you can learn about the conservation efforts for these magnificent creatures and even participate in a turtle release. The cost? 44 MXN=$2.61 USD. It is awesome and I will be blogging about it in another post. The town’s commitment to eco-tourism and wellness makes it the perfect destination for those seeking a holistic and transformative experience.
